2013-14 New School Requirement |
 |
 |
 |
 |
12/14/2012
Parents and Guardians of 6th through 12th graders:
As you are probably aware, there have been numerous outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) among school children in Illinois. Pertussis is easily transmitted through coughing and sneezing and may cause an illness that persists for weeks to months. Pertussis can be life-threatening in infants and individuals with chronic illnesses. Protection against pertussis starts to wear off during grade school, leaving pre-teens, teenagers, and adults at risk.
To address this increase in pertussis cases among older students, the
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has enforced a new requirement for this school year and all following:
Students entering 6th through 12th grades are now required to provide proof of a Tdap vaccination. This is not a new vaccination. This school year, they were only enforcing this new rule for 6th and 9th graders. But, in school year 2013-2014, all students entering 6th - 12th who have not received a Tdap, will be required to receive one Tdap dose regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT, or Td dose.
This JCAR ruling will be fully enforced starting the first day of school in the 2013-2014 school year. There will be no exceptions
.
Your child may have already had this vaccination, but please clarify this with their physician as there may be a difference in the way this was recorded on your child's health record. Please bring this confirmation to your child's School Health office or School office.
You can contact the School-Based Health Center for appointments for physicals and immunizations at 815-389-9252 for the coming school year.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 815-289-1385 or 815-389-4001 extension 4160. Thank you.
