Illinois Free Lunch and Breakfast Program
Every public school must have a free lunch program that provides free/reduced lunches (and breakfasts if a school offers breakfast) to students eligible to receive free/reduced meals, per 105 ILCS 125/4 and 23 Illinois Administrative Code 305.10.
Per USDA regulations household applications cannot be distributed to households any earlier than 4 weeks prior to the first day of school. Additionally, Food Service will first access the Electronic Direct Certification system in order to determine households that do not need to receive household applications. By determining households that are eligible for free meals through the Electronic Direct Certification system, the District would only need to provide household application packets to those households not found in that system. This will cut down on the cost of printing, mailing and personnel time in processing applications for those that are already certified via the Electronic Direct Certification system.
